sui generis

Don’t make me one of those friends you only talk to when you’re bored or hang out with when you have nothing else to do.

Anonymous: Do you have any advice for choreographing dances? (contemporary/jazz)

Hmm. Well, I’m flattered you asked me but I don’t know if I’m the best person for advice. But here are a couple notes I always try to keep in mind when I’m choreographing:

What kind of character are you trying to communicate to your audience? Shape your own story out of the song you’re using. Challenge yourself. Don’t stick to basic preps for turns and kicks. Don’t feel obligated to randomly stick in technique and tricks - it should flow naturally into the choreography. Don’t be afraid to travel and use the floor! What are the dynamics of the song? Remember to leave time to breathe.

Best piece of advice I can give you is to just do what feels good to you! After I choose a song, I’ll just listen to it over and over again just to get a feel for it first. Then I’ll improv to it just to get the ball rolling. Good luck and hope this helps! :)

"There are several kinds of love. One is a selfish, mean, grasping, egotistical thing which uses love for self-importance. This is the ugly and crippling kind. The other is an outpouring of everything good in you — of kindness and consideration and respect — not only the social respect of manners but the greater respect which is recognition of another person as unique and valuable. The first kind can make you sick and small and weak but the second can release in you strength, and courage and goodness and even wisdom you didn’t know you had."

My best friend ever since I made her cry by stealing her shoe in 1st grade. To this very day, we can’t give each other hugs without feeling super awkward and laughing our heads off. She came to watch Dustin and I at Friends and Family ^_____^

It’s amazing how quickly a good rehearsal and amazing class changed my mood! Even though I just failed my last final today and I’ve been consistently getting 4-5 hours of sleep everyday for the past week. Thank you BT429 and Tracy for reminding me why I keep dancing!

And thank you to all my friends who willingly listened to me rant or whine, gave me a hug or smile, messaged me on Facebook with a kind word, sent an encouraging text or even just a tweet wishing me luck. Having people like you in my life remind me why I’m blessed. Love :)

It’s been a craaazy two weeks. Glad it’s over. Now I can finally relax!

Me: Are you going to the Company workshops?
Alvin: Only if you are cause we haven't danced or taken class in a while and it seems like Sunday is the only day we can.
Me: Sigh I feel bad cause I feel like i should spend time with my family but I really want to learn from the Company.
Alvin: No, you just want to see Jeff Flores sweat. He's super hot when he glistens.
Anonymous: what do you want to do out of college? are you planning on becoming a professional dancer :)

Nope, no professional dancing for me! I want to work either as a speech pathologist or a special education teacher. I believe both careers require a master’s degree or some sort of special certification, so I guess I’ll be going to grad school. Hopefully I’ll be working at the same time so my parents don’t have to pay for my education any longer.

I love dance, but it will always be just a hobby for me. Dance isn’t my life, but it gives meaning to my life. It’s a welcome, but temporary escape from the mundane parts of my everyday life (aka studying, going to school). Plus, I don’t think there’s any room in the professional dance industry for mediocre dancers. I’m content dancing within a local community and just having fun :)
