"There is a big difference between taking class, taking a master class, and going to rehearsal. You do not write a novel in English class, you learn the basics of it, like grammar, syntax and style. Likewise, you should not just learn pieces in classes; you should learn basic technique and foundations and the universal moves of ball changes, plies, triplets and chainee turns. Choreography is awesome, but there’s no way a piece can be considered ‘teaching fundamentals’. Then again, we do live in a world of instant gratification, and I’ve found dancers only want to learn the piece even though they can’t do the moves."
